Abstract

A lubricating grease composition comprises a mineral lubricating oil of viscosity 70-150 S.S.U. at 210 DEG F. and at least 70 viscosity index gelled with a lithium soap of an hydroxy fatty acid and an alkali, or alkaline earth, metal naphthenate. The mineral oil may be a single oil or a blend which produces the above viscosity and viscosity index characteristics, preferably a blend of a distillate fraction with a Bright Stock. The hydroxy fatty acids are especially those containing between 10 and 36 carbon atoms, most practically those from hydrogenated castor oil or the catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbon oil waxes. Examples are 9-, 10-, 11-, and 12-hydroxy stearic, 10- and 15-hydroxy palmitic, hydroxy myristic, hydroxy behenic, 5,6-, 6,7-, 7,8-, 8,11-, 9,10-, and 10,11-dihydroxystearic and 2,11-dihydroxy palmitic acids. Preferred alkali, or alkaline earth, metal naphthenates are calcium, barium, magnesium, sodium, lithium, and potassium naphthenates. Naphthenic acids include the alicyclic carboxylic acids such as the cyclopentane- and cyclohexane-carboxylic acids, and may be modified by substituted groups such as aryl and/or alkyl radicals, unsaturated straight and/or branched-chain radicals, substituted alkyl, aryl, and/or alkene radicals and the saturated cyclic carboxylic acids may also be modified, the addition of side groups comprising saturated cyclic hydrocarbons or by condensation to form two or more chemically-fused saturated hydrocarbons. Examples are the naphthenic acids extractable from petroleum oils and other natural sources, e.g. abietic acid from pine rosin. Optional ingredients are the esters of aliphatic carboxylic acids and polyalkylene glycols, alkaline earth metal hydrocarbon sulphonates, antioxidants such as diaryl amines, e.g. phenyl-alpha-naphthyl-amine and 1-salicylal amino guanidine mono-oleate. In examples lithium 12-hydroxy stearate and lithium and calcium naphthenate are used with and without the addition of poly-(oxyethylene)-glycol mono-oleate, calcium petroleum sulphonates, phenyl alpha-naphthylamine and 1-salicylal amino guanidine mono-oleate.
