Abstract

A soluble oil composition for use in the cold rolling of metals comprises a lubricating oil, for example, mineral oil, from 0.1 to 50 per cent. by weight of an oiliness or extreme pressure agent and sufficient of an emulsifying agent to enable the composition to emulsify completely in water but insufficient to make the resulting emulsion a stable one. Oiliness or extreme pressure agents referred to are fatty oils, fatty acids, organic phosphates and phosphites, sulphurized and/or phosphorized fatty oils, sulphurized fatty acids, aliphatic esters and halogenated hydrocarbons. Specified compounds are tricresyl and tributyl phosphate and sperm oil. Emulsifying agents specified are alkali and alkaline earth, for example sodium and calcium, petroleum sulphonates, sodium naphthenate, trialkanolamine fatty acid soaps such as triethanolamine oleate, sodium oleate, and C12-C24 fatty acid esters of polyhydric alcohols, for example, sorbitan monoleate or an alkylene oxide derivative thereof or sorbitan mono- or di-stearate. Diethylene glycol may be added to the compositions. The compositions are compared with compositions forming stable emulsions which may also contain candelilla wax and alcohol.
