Abstract

A lubricating composition suitable for use in drawing metals comprises a blend of a metal-drawing compound, in the form of an oil or grease containing an alkali metal soap of one or more animal fatty materials, with a soluble oil containing a lubricating oil together with one or more emulsifying agents, the amount of the drawing compound being between 20 and 55 per cent by weight of the total composition. The composition is emulsifiable with water and, after its use in drawing metals, may be removed by simple washing with water. The alkali metal soap employed in the metal-drawing compound may be derived from tallow or whale oil, for example by isolating the fatty acids and neutralizing these with a dilute alkali metal hydroxide such as potassium hydroxide. The lubricating oil employed in the soluble oil may be a hydrocarbon lubricating oil or a synthetic oil from any source, but mineral oils are preferred. Suitable emulsifying agents for use in the soluble oils are oil-soluble metal petroleum sulphonates or naphthenates, particularly sodium petroleum sulphonates. The soluble oil may contain additional ingredients such as emulsion stabilizers (e.g. alkali metal or alkaline earth metal naphthenates, diethylene glycol or methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl alcohol), anti-foaming agents (e.g. silicone oils or vegetable waxes such as candelilla wax), oiliness or extreme pressure agents (e.g. isopropyl oleate, tricresyl phosphate, chlorinated wax, fatty oils and sulphurized or phosphorized oils such as sulphurized sperm oil) and anti-corrosion additives (e.g. alkali metal benzoates). The lubricating composition is preferably formed by working the drawing compound with the soluble oil, the drawing compound and the soluble oil being formed separately. In an example, a drawing compound (prepared from tallow, whale oil fatty acids, potassium hydroxide and water) is blended with a soluble oil (prepared from mineral oil, sodium petroleum sulphonates, naphthenic acids, caustic soda, water, isopropyl alcohol, candelilla wax and chlorinated paraffin wax).
