Abstract

An emulsifiable oil composition suitable for use as a soluble cutting oil in metal-working operations comprises a major proportion of a lubricating oil and a minor proportion of the spent aqueous residue obtained from the treatment of a naphthenic mineral lubricating oil with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal aromatic sulphonate and sodium hydroxide. The lubricating oil employed in the emulsifiable oil composition may be a mineral lubricating oil, but synthetic lubricating oils such as diesters, complex esters or synthetic hydrocarbon oils may form a part of, or the whole of, the lubricating oil. The aqueous solution mentioned above is known as "Napex" and may contain such alkali metal aromatic sulphonates as sodium xylene and/or toluene sulphonates. The spent "Napex" is a heavy sludge containing a relatively large proportion of naphthenates and some of the sulphonates. The emulsifiable oil composition may contain additional ingredients such as oil-soluble petroleum sulphonates (e.g. sodium petroleum sulphonates), other soaps (e.g. sodium or potassium rosinates), non-ionic emulsifiers (e.g. partial esters of polycarboxylic acids), fatty acids (e.g. oleic acid), triethanolamine, aliphatic alcohols (e.g. diethylene glycol or isopropyl alcohol), rust inhibitors (e.g. phosphates or chromates), extreme pressure agents and oiliness agents. A small amount of water added to the composition aids emulsification.
