Abstract

A lubricating composition, which may be employed under extreme pressure conditions without causing excessive wear of metal parts which operate in frictional contact, comprises a lubricating oil having incorporated therein a minor proportion of (a) formic or acetic acid or an amide or an alkylamine salt thereof having from 1 to 3 alkyl groups each containing from 1 to 20 carbon atoms together with (b) an emulsifying agent which will solubilize ingredient (a) in the oil. The lubricating oil may be a mineral oil or a synthetic oil or mixtures thereof. Synthetic oils mentioned are dibasic acid esters, complex esters (based on polyfunctional acids and alcohols), polyglycols and glycol ethers. The lubricating composition may be a gear oil, a cutting oil (whether of the straight oil or emulsifiable type), a grease, or other liquid, semi-solid or solid lubricant, and the composition may contain additional ingredients such as water, blending agents, antioxidants, detergents and rust inhibitors. Alkylamine salts which may be employed as ingredient (a) include mono-, di- and tri-methylamine formate. Ingredient (b) may be a metal sulphonate or a higher fatty acid such as oleic acid. Sulphonates mentioned are alkali metal (e.g. sodium or potassium), alkaline earth metal (e.g. calcium, barium or strontium) or magnesium salts of sulphonic acids, particularly oilsoluble petroleum sulphonic acids. In examples, lubricating compositions are described which consist of mineral lubricating oil, sodium petroleum sulphonate and either (i) formic acid with or without water or (ii) "Armeen T" formate, the "Armeen T" being a commercial mixture of secondary fatty amines whose fatty radicles have less than 20 carbon atoms. For comparison purposes, lubricating compositions are described which consist of mineral lubricating oil and (A) one of formic acid, acetic acid, caprylic acid, oleic acid, formamide, dimethyl formamide, diphenyl formamide, ethyl formate, tricresyl phosphate and sodium petroleum sulphonate; (B) tricresyl phosphate with formic acid, oleic acid or sodium petroleum sulphonate; (C) sodium petroleum sulphonate with oleic acid or calcium formate; or (D) sodium petroleum sulphonate and water with formanilide, formyl diphenylamine, oleic acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid or calcium formate. A composition consisting of certain proportions of mineral oil, formamide, sodium isopropyl naphthalene sulphonate, glue, ethylene glycol, ethylene glycol monocresyl ether and water is disclaimed.
