Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises mineral lubricating oil thickened to grease consistency with 5-25 per cent by weight based on the whole composition of an oil-soluble metal sulphonate and 3-20 per cent of an oil-insoluble metal salt of one or more alkyl sulphonic acids. The sulphonates may be salts of sodium, lithium, calcium, barium, zinc or aluminium. The oil-soluble metal sulphonates may be salts of oil-soluble petroleum sulphonic acids while the oil-insoluble metal sulphonates may be salts of one or more of methane, ethane, propane and butane sulphonic acids. If desired, sulphonates containing an excess of metal base over that required to neutralize the sulphonic acid may be employed. The lubricating composition may also contain additional ingredients such as antioxidants, rust inhibitors, tackiness agents, viscosity index improvers and extreme pressure agents. In the examples, mineral lubricating oil compositions containing (1) calcium petroleum sulphonate and calcium ethane sulphonate; (2) barium petroleum sulphonate and barium ethane sulphonate; or (3) sodium petroleum sulphonate and sodium ethane sulphonate, are described. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to a grease composition consisting essentially of mineral lubricating oil containing 5 to 25 per cent by weight, based on the total composition, of an oil-soluble metal sulphonate, and 3 to 20 per cent of an oil-insoluble metal sulphonate. The oil-soluble metal sulphonate may be derived from the petroleum sulphonic acids known as black or green acids. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
