Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises a major proportion of a lubricating oil, 0.1-4 per cent of degras (wool fat), 0.05-5 per cent of an oil-soluble water emulsifying agent, 0.5-10 per cent of a sulphurized fatty oil, 0.05-3 per cent of an oil-soluble organic ester of an oxy-acid of phosphorus and 0.05-5 per cent of a viscous hydrocarbon polymer having a molecular weight of from 2,000 to 100,000, all percentages being by weight based on the total composition. Mineral lubricating oil, of viscosity between 50 and 500 S.S.U. at 100 DEG F, is preferred, but the dibasic acid esters and the glycol and glycol ether lubricants may be used. Alkali or alkaline earth metal (particularly sodium or calcium) petroleum sulphonates are specified for the water emulsifying agent. The sulphurized fatty oil may be sulphurized sperm oil or lard oil, sulphurized to a sulphur content of 2 to 30 per cent. If desired, sulphurized degras may be employed. Specified esters of oxyacids of phosphorus are tricresyl phosphate and phosphite and tributyl phosphate and phosphite. The preferred hydrocarbon polymer is a polybutene of molecular weight between 10,000 and 50,000; natural rubber, synthetic rubbers such as butyl rubber, polystyrene and alkylated polystyrenes may also be used if they are sufficiently oil-soluble and compatible with the other ingredients. The prefererd composition, upon which comparative tests are made, comprises mineral lubricating oil 92.4, degras 2, sulphurized sperm oil 3, calcium petroleum sulphonate 0.6, tricresyl phosphate 1 and polybutene (15,000-30,000 molecular weight) 1 per cent.
