Abstract

Hydrocarbon lubricating oils or greases are improved by the presence of 0,5 to 10 per cent of one of the following: furoic acid, alkylated furoic acids of the type of b -methyl furoic acid, hydrogenated furoic acids and the esters thereof, e.g. the mono- or poly-hydric alcoholic esters such as the methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, amyl, lauryl, cetyl, octadecyl, oleyl, glycol, glycerol esters; the aromatic esters, such as benzyl esters; and the esters from phenols such as phenol and cresol. There may also be present soaps, pour point depressants, dyes, thickeners, and oxidation inhibitors. The greases may contain heavy high-melting waxes, such as petrolatum, montan, carnauba or candelilla wax, and soaps such as soda, potash, or calcium soaps. Reversible calcium greases contain calcium soap, and, in addition to the above ingredients, sulphonic compounds, e.g. the salts of mahogany acids, with or without water. In examples: (1) the oxidation of a hydrocarbon lubricating oil is reduced by adding 2 per cent butyl furoate; (2) the corrosion of cadmium - on - silver and cadmium - on - nickel bearings by two hydrocarbon lubricating oils is decreased by adding 2 per cent of butyl furoate; (3) the lubricating properties of a hydrocarbon oil are improved by adding 0,5, 1, and 2 per cent of butyl furoate; (4) a "reversible" lime grease consists of a red machine oil, high-melting petrolatum p wax, lime soap, calcium mahogany sulphonate, water, glycerol and 2 per cent butyl furoate; (5) an upper cylinder lubricant consists of an aviation gasoline and 1 per cent butyl furoate.
