Abstract

Non-freezing lubricants are made by mixing or emulsifying oils or fats of mineral, animal or vegetable origin with a glycol or a hydroxy-containing ether thereof, and a dispersing agent such as a soap, a salt of high molecular sulphonic acids or an alkylolamine. Diluents such as water, organic solvents e.g. acetone, formamide, ethyl alcohol, or small amounts of alkalies or salts may be added. A mixture of spindle oil and tallow, colophony, or the acid oxidation products of paraffin wax, is mixed with ethylene glycol, borax, benzyl alcohol, and an aqueous solution of potash, to form a homogeneous mass which is used to lubricate locomotive axles &c., electrical contacts, and railway switches, or used in hydraulic presses or brakes, or as a rust-preventing coating composition. Ethylene glycol may be replaced by the corresponding mono-ethyl or cresyl-ether, or by polyglycol, and glycerine may be added thereto.
