Abstract

Lead soaps of hydroxy-stearic acids, for use as ingredients in lubricating greases, are prepared by metathesis or by direct combination of the acids with lead oxide. The soaps mentioned are those of 10-hydroxy-stearic acid, 12-hydroxy-stearic acid and 9.10-dihydroxystearic acid. In an example, a mixture of sodium hydroxide solution and hydrogenated castor oil melted in water is heated until saponification is complete. Lead acetate solution is added and then enough acetic acid to make the mixture acid to phenolphthalein; the lead salt of hydrogenated ricinoleic acid is precipitated and filtered off, washed and dried at about 105 DEG C. In a second example, a grease containing this soap is formed by adding a mixture of lead oxide and mineral oil to fatty acids of hydrogenated castor oil melted in mineral oil at 300-325 DEG F., stirring, and then adding more mineral oil.ALSO:A lubricating grease contains a lubricant base and a lead soap of a hydroxy-stearic acid. The lubricant base may be a mineral, animal or vegetable oil or a mixture, and naphthene base oils are specified. The lead soaps of 10-hydroxy-stearic acid, 12-hydroxy-stearic acid, and 9 : 10-dihydroxy-stearic acid are mentioned. Other substances which may be added are organic soaps of hydroxy-stearic acids, inorganic soaps such as aluminium, calcium and sodium soaps, butyl carbitol, higher alcohols, of which a number are specified, ethanolamines, either alone or as soaps, and rosin.
