Abstract

A lubricant comprises a mineral oil, one or more blown fatty oils and 0.05 to 5 per cent of one or more basic alkaline earth metal salts of an oil-soluble naphthasulphonic acid. The blown fatty oils are derived from fatty oils of the semi-drying type which may be of animal or vegetable origin; whale oil, rapeseed oil, cotton-seed oil and maize oil, or mixtures thereof, are specified. The basic calcium salt of the naphthasulphonic acid is preferably used, but the strontium, barium and magnesium salts are also mentioned. Mixtures of basic and neutral salts may be used. The lubricant may contain 2-5 per cent of the blown fatty oil and preferably 0.1-0.5 per cent of the salt. About 0.5 to 5 per cent of acid-free tallow may be added to the composition. The lubricants may be used where lubrication in presence of aqueous liquids is necessary, and especially in marine engines. In a typical example, a lubricating composition consists of acid refined lubricating oil of viscosity 250 DEG Redwood 1 at 140 DEG F., blown fish oil, and a mineral oil solution of mixed basic and neutral calcium salts of oil-soluble naphtha-sulphonic acids.
