Abstract

Alkali soap greases are prepared by saponifying a lubricating oil solution of a saponifiable fatty material having at least 15 carbon atoms per molecule with anhydrous alkali, the latter being in a lubricating oil suspension. The anhydrous alkali is preferably made by evaporation of a caustic solution in the presence of kerosene or other suitable hydrocarbon liquid. Residual kerosene may be removed from the anhydrous alkali by washing with naphtha and then drying. The saponifiable material may comprise the usual fats, fatty acids, and in addition, synthetic fatty acids derived from the oxidation of paraffin wax, hydrogenated fish oil acids, and other carboxylic acids of at least 15 carbon atoms such as naphthenic acids derived from petroleum. The mixed ingredients are heated to 200-500 DEG F. until saponification is complete and part or all of the water of neutralization of fatty acid or glycerine from fats has been driven off. The whole of the process may be effected continuously.
