Abstract

244,947. British Celanese, Ltd., Ryley, C. F., and Awcock, G. A. June 27, 1924. Sizes.-Sizing preparations for yarns or threads, particularly those of silk, spun silk, or artificial silk, comprise one or more waterinsoluble salts or soaps of resin acids or of naphthenic acids in combination with one or more lubricating agents, namely, non-volatile non- drying oils, fats, waxes, or liquid or solid fatty acids. The water-insoluble resin or naphthenic acid salts or soaps are preferably those of calcium, magnesium, zinc, aluminium or equivalent metals. One or more soaps of fatty acids, including those of sodium potassium, ammonium, but preferably those of calcium, magnesium, zinc or aluminium, may be added. The resin or naphthenic acid soap or salt may be dissolved in benzol, toluol, xylol, oil of turpentine, &c., with admixture of the lubricating agent; or emulsifying agents may be used; or the materials may be melted together. The following is given as an example : Calcium resinate 20 parts by weight, lard 9 parts, benzol 25 parts, with or without zinc oleate 2 parts. The preparation may be applied by dipping the yarn in hanks, or during winding of yarn; or it may be applied to artificial threads of cellulose esters or ethers continuously with their production by the dry or evaporative spinning method, as described in Specification 210,266, [Class 120 (iii), Yarns &c.]. The metallic bases in the preparations reduce the tendency to electrification during the working of the yarns. The size may be removed by scouring with a soap solution, with or without previous treatment with acid. According to the Provisional Specification, the sodium, potassium, or ammonium, salts of resin or naphthenic acids may be utilised.
