Abstract

When stretching by mechanical means, filaments, threads, yarns, &c. of cellulose acetate or other ester or ether of cellulose, an improvement in tenacity results if the assisting agent with which the threads &c. are treated to bring them into a condition for stretching, comprises a water-miscible solvent and an oily or fatty body or soap or wetting agent either dissolved or emulsified in the assisting agent. There may be used animal or vegetable oils; the soaps of such oils, including the ethanolamine and other organic soaps; sulphonated soaps; sulphonated fatty alcohols; w-alkylamides of fatty acids and their sulphonated derivatives; and alkylated naphthalene sulphonic acids. Stretching may take place continuously with the production of the threads &c. or subsequently thereto, and it may be performed on the hank or other package or on the travelling materials as in Specification 323,790, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], and with the materials in warp formation as in Specification 371,461, and in stages as in Specification 370,430; and the material may be subjected to the preliminary softening treatment of Specification 392,185. Continuously with stretching, the materials may be submitted to saponification which may be superficial, partial or complete. In examples, the assisting agents consist of an emulsion of linseed oil in an aqueous solution of ethyl lactate and triethanolamine oleate, and of a solution of dioxane containing the sodium salt of the sulphuric ester of lauryl alcohol, the amount of the stretching being 100--200 per cent and 400--500 respectively. The cellulose esters and ethers of which the materials are made, may be of low, medium or high viscosity.
