Abstract

570,852. Detergent compositions. COOK, H. A., and COOK, I. July 19, 1943, No. 11689. [Class 91] A soap-substitute, which may be made up in the form of single-user washing leaflets, comprises paper with which has been associated one or more detergents of the sulphated or sulphonated type, the term paper including papers formed from alginic acid and its derivatives. Suitable detergents are produced by the action of sulphuric acid or sulphur trioxide on such organic substances as hydrocarbons, fatty or aromatic acids, fatty alcohols, phenols, fatty oils, mineral oils, aliphatic or aromatic esters, ethers or amides, woolfat and waxes. These detergents may be condensed with fatty acids or alcohols, or neutralised by organic or inorganic basis, before use. The soap-substitute may contain additional substances such as disinfectants, phenols, esters, carboxylic acids, salts, colouring substances, perfumes, deodorants and antiseptics. The detergent or other substances may be associated with the paper either during the manufacture of the paper or thereafter and in the latter instance the detergent may be calendered on or into the paper. In examples (a) filter paper is passed through an aqueous solution of sodium sulphate and a mixture of sodium salts of the sulphated fatty alcohols of the C14 to C18 range, and then dried, (b) filter paper is soaked in an aqueous solution of zinc phenolsulphonate and sulphated lauryl alcohol, and then dried and (c) paper is made by the revolving drum method from an aqueous solution of sodium alginate containing china clay, sodium hexametaphosphate and the sulphated detergent of (a) above. Specification 460,543 is referred to.
