Liquids, treating with; designs, producing; crape effects, producing.-Cellulose fibres, yarns, or fabrics are given transparent, wool, linen, damask, crape, or parchmentized effects by subjecting them to sulphuric acid in conjunction with methyl alcohol, acetone, or acetic acid or their homologues which are miscible in sulphuric acid, whereby the action of the sulphuric acid is reduced in rapidity but not in effectiveness. The products of the reaction between the sulphuric acid and the additional substances may be formed by their mixture with the acid or they may be added to the acid. Pattern effects may be produced by applying the reagents to parts only of the material by the application of a resist or by spraying, printing, stencilling, &c., the added substances acting as a thickener for the sulphuric acid. Pattern effects may also be produced by calendering or embossing the material prior to treatment.
