Abstract
802,356. Sizing paper &c. HERCULES POWDER CO. March 3, 1955, No. 6383/55. Class 96. Paper is sized, e.g. at any stage of manufacture after web formation by impregnation with an aqueous emulsion having dispersed therein, a dimer of a ketene having 6 to 20 or more carbon atoms, and having attached to the C=C=O group only hydrogen or hydrocarbon radicals, 0.01 to 1.0 per cent of the dimer being retained on the paper and reacting with the cellulose fibres to effect the sizing. The dimers may be of mono- or di-alkyl ketenes, e.g. hexyl, decyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl, hexadecyl or octadecyl, or mixtures made from natural fats or oils. They may be emulsified with a thickening agent, e.g. starch, or carboxymethyl cellulose (0.7 per glucose unit) and the dimer may be supplied in solution, e.g. in benzine, benzene, or carbon tetrachloride, &c., and applied to e.g. bleached sulphite webs as by tub sizing, coating techniques, or spraying &c., and the paper heated or allowed to stand for several days at room temperature. There may be up to 100 parts of thickener to one of dimer. Specification 802,357 is referred to.
