Abstract

Salts of carbamic acids the nitrogen atom of which carries a free hydrogen atom and also a higher aliphatic hydrocarbon radical with an amine derived from the carbamic acid by loss of carbon dioxide are prepared by reacting the addition product of an alkali metal bisulphite and a higher aliphatic isocyanate with sodium hydroxide in a heated aqueous medium. The emulsion produced may be salted out by addition of sodium chloride. The term "higher aliphatic hydrocarbon radical" is defined as having an uninterrupted chain of at least eight carbon atoms as well as radicals whose carbon chain is interrupted by hetero atoms or groups of hetero atoms. The preparation of such a salt from sodium bisulphite and stearyl isocyanate (i.e. a mixture of octadecyl and hexadecyl isocyanates) is described. Specifications 654,163 and 655,541 are referred to.ALSO:Cotton, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, wool, silk and nylon textiles may be rendered resistant to shrinking by the addition of resin-forming substances such as methylol urea or the condensation product of melamine, formaldehyde and methyl alcohol to a water proofing bath comprising an aqueous dispersion or emulsion of a salt of a carbamic acid, the nitrogen atom of which carries a free hydrogen atom and also a higher aliphatic hydrocarbon radical with an amine derived from the carbamic acid by loss of carbon dioxide. The impregnated fabric is dried at a temperature above 100 DEG C. The term "higher aliphatic hydrocarbon radical" is defined as an aliphatic radical having an uninterrupted chain of at least eight carbon atoms as well as radicals whose chain is interrupted by hetero atoms or groups of hetero atoms. Paraffin or wax emulsions may be added to the impregnating bath. If desired the impregnated fabric may be treated with a dispersion of a soap of a polyvalent metal prior to drying, or a soap may be added to the impregnating bath and the impregnated material treated with a water-soluble salt of a polyvalent metal such as aluminium acetate, zirconium oxychloride, zirconium acetate, or zirconium formate.
