Abstract
Water soluble condensation products are prepared by reacting an alkyl monocarbonate of the formula R11O.OC.NH2 in which R11 is an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms with formaldehyde in aqueous alkaline solution and in a mole ratio of formaldehyde to alkyl monocarbamate of at least 2:1. Preferred carbamates are those of the above formula wherein R11 is an ethyl or butyl radical. Examples are given. The products are used in the finishing of cellulosic textile fabrics (see Division D1).ALSO:Cellulosic textile fabrics are finished by impregnating the fabric in the presence of an acid catalyst with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble condensation product derived from an alkyl monocarbamate and formaldehyde (see Division C2), followed by curing at a temperature above 130 DEG C. The treatment renders the fabrics wrinkle-and crease-resistant. The fabrics are defined as textile fabrics of all kinds, including woven and knitted fabrics, made wholly or partly of natural cellulose, regenerated cellulose or cellulose derivatives. The impregnated fabric is preferably dried prior to curing. Specified acid catalysts are inorganic or amine salts of strong mineral acids, preferably the hydrates of zinc nitrate or magnesium chloride. The treating bath may contain other auxiliary agents such as wetting and softening agents. The solution may be applied to the fabric by conventional procedures, such as soaking the textile in the solution and padding or centrifuging, followed by drying and curing and then washing off unreacted materials. Examples describe the treatment of cotton print cloth. A comparative example describes the treatment of cotton print cloth with an aqueous solution of dimethylol ethyleneurea and zinc nitrate.
