Abstract
Woven and knitted fabrics containing a major proportion by weight of regenerated cellulose staple fibres which are in the form of yarns and of which the regenerated cellulose has been crosslinked prior to the conversion of the staple fibres into yarns to the extent of reducing its water inhibition to not greater than 70% are subjected to agitation while wet with an aqueous liquid to give them a full hand and a full, even cover. The water inhibition is defined as the per cent by weight of the oven dry weight of the fibre of water retained in water-saturated material after centrifuging a 0.5 gm sample for 5 minutes at 1000 g. The cross-linking treatment may be carried out on already cut staple fibres or on continuous filaments prior to cutting into staple fibre, if desired in the gel state, with heat hardenable aminoplasts, e.g. condensation products of formaldehyde with urea, melamine, dicyandiamide or guanidine and combinations thereof and methylol-amino-epihalohydrin compounds, acrolein-formaldehyde resins acetone-formaldehyde resins, polyepoxy resins, e.g. poly functional compounds having at least two epoxy groups linked through a hydrocarbon, a polyhydric alcohol or a polyhydric phenol group, reactant type resins, e.g. partially or wholly methylated methylol ureas and their lower polymers, methylolethylene urea, methylol 1:2-propylene urea, the methyl esters of these cyclic ureas and the methyl ethers of these methylol cyclic ureas, formaldehyde, polyaldehydes or hydroxy aldehydes. The aqueous liquid may be water alone or containing 0.2-4% by weight of a wetting agents, e.g. common soap, i.e. the alkali metal salts of a mixture of longchain fatty acids, a sulphate or sulphonate of a longchain alcohol, an alkyl acrylsulphonate, a sulphated or sulphonated amide or derivative thereof or amine, a fatty acid ester of polyglycerol or glycol, a triethanolamine soap of a fatty acid or a quatenary ammonium salt, at a pH not above about 12. The fabric may be treated at 60 DEG - 98 DEG C. for 1/2 - 6 hours in a conventional washing machine or fulling machine or the agitation may be part of a dyeing operation. After the wet agitation the fabric may be further treated with a cross-linking agent to improve its crease resistance prior to or after making into garments, creases or pleats if desired being inserted in the fabric or garment prior to curing. The fabric may also contain wool, cotton, linen, polyester, polyamide, acrylic or cellulose ester fibres. Specifications 732,573, 796,815, 872,650, 878,655, 878,656, 930,132 and 950,073 are referred to.
