Abstract

Cellulosic materials are crease proofed and shrinkproofed and their swelling properties may be reduced by applying thereto an aqueous composition comprising a mixture of formaldehyde and an alkyl carbamate of the formula H2NCOOR in which R is an alkyl or cycloalkyl group in which the mole ratio of formaldehyde to carbamate is at least 3:1, and heating the treated materials at a temperature sufficient to fix the aldehyde on the materials but insufficient to cause any substantial nitrogen fixation. The composition which may be in relatively concentrated form and may be diluted with water to obtain the desired treating bath may be neutral, alkaline or acidic and may also contain wetting agents, e.g. a nonyl phenol-ethylene oxide condensate, hand modifiers, softeners, e.g. dimethyl polysiloxane oil, acrylic polymers, polyvinyl alcohol, brighteners, magnesium chloride, sodium chloride and formic acid. The treated fibres may subsequently be treated with additional catalyst, sodium meter bisulphite and a softener e.g. emulsified tallow softener and dried, and in the case of fabrics then creased and pressed. Yarns or fabrics comprising cotton alone or in admixture with polyester firbes or fabrics comprising a viscose rayon non-woven web or polypropylene-viscose rayon non woven web needled into a polypropylene or cotton scrim and palmered and calendered, may be treated.
