Abstract

Hydrophobic filaments, fibres and films are improved by soaking them in an aqueous solution of caustic alkali, then with at least one oleophilic agent and then heating them when at least 0,2% of said agent is available on their surface, heating being continued for a time and at such a temperature until complete saturation by at least one of said agents is attained. Hyhrophobic filaments, fibres and films specified are those made from synthetic linear polymers comprising the polyamides and highly polymeric polymethylene terephthalates. The agents having oleophilic properties comprise oils, surface active agents, e.g. detergents, wetting agents, penetrants, spreaders and softeners. The surface active agent may be an ethylene oxide condensate. The heat treatment may be effected with steam at super-atmospheric pressure. This heat treatment may be combined with a heat setting and/or a dye fixation treatment. The fibres or filaments are preferably treated when made up into fabrics or garments. The treatment yields textile articles having antistatic properties, improved durability, a decreased tendency to soiling, greater ease of washing and an improved dye-uptake.ALSO:Hydrophobic filaments, fibres and films are improved by soaking them in an aqueous solution of caustic alkali, then with at least one oleophilic agent and then heating them when at least 0,2% of said agent is available on their surface, heating being continued for a time and such a temperature until complete saturation by at least one of said agents is attained. The agents having oleophilic properties comprise oils, surface active agents, e.g. detergents, wetting agents, penetrants, spreaders and softeners. The surface active agent may be an ethylene oxide condensate. The heat treatment may be effected with steam at super-atmospheric pressure. This heat treatment may be combined with a heat setting and/or a dye fixation treatment. The fibres or filaments are preferably treated when made up into fabrics or garments.
