Abstract

Linear polyester filaments, fibres, bristles, fabrics, films and like shaped articles are coloured by padding or printing with an aqueous solution or dispersion of one or more dyestuffs and subsequently treating with steam under superatmospheric pressure. The materials may be treated in made-up form, e.g., hosiery, and the steaming is carried out during the setting process. Suitable dyestuffs are vat dyestuffs, dispersed insoluble dyestuffs, sulphuric ester dyestuffs of the type used for dyeing acetate rayon and azoic dyes. In an Example, polyethylene terephthalate fibre in the form of hosiery is padded with a dye liquor containing p-nitroaniline-->aniline, 1, 5-di-(methylamino)-4, 8 - dihydroxy - anthraquinone, ammonium polymethacrylate and sulphonated oleic acid, placed on a shaped former and steamed at 20 p.s.i. pressure to fix the dye and set the hosiery.
