Abstract

Differential colour effects in cotton-containing fabrics are produced by pretreating the fabric with a material which modifies its ability to be dyed by a reactive dyestuff, e.g. a cellulose reactant anti-crease agent (or alternatively a reducing agent or an acid salt), flock printing a design with rayon flock fibres and overprinting at least part of the flock-printed design and at least part of the unprinted fabric with a cellulose reactant dyestuff. The unflocked base fabric may be predyed with a black dye (omitting the anti-crease treatment) to form a colour resist thereon, or with a non-black dye followed by the anti-crease treatment to obtain a colour resist. As an optional feature, the anti-crease treated fabric may be calendered prior to flock printing. In a specific embodiment, bleached cotton fabric is treated with an aqueous composition containing dimethylol ethyleneurea, dicyandiamide, glycerine, polyoxyethylene fatty/resin ester, ethanolamine hydrochloride and wax-modified polyethylene emulsion, calendered, flock printed with viscose tow using a polyurethane base adhesive and overprinted with dyes known under the Trade Marks "Cibacron," "Drimarine," "Procion" and "Remazol," with the addition to the printing composition of NaHCO3, Na2CO3, NaOH, urea, sodium, m-nitrobenzenesulphonate and sodium alginate, followed by ageing, washing and dyeing.
