Abstract
227,480. Huebner, J. July 18, 1923. Liquids, treating with; designs, producing; crape effects, producing; edges, treating; bronzing and the like.- Fabrics and yarns especially those made of or containing cotton are treated with a solution of cellulose in ammoniacal cupric oxide and are then mercerized with or without tension before or after treatment to remove the copper. The mercerization may be replaced by a treatment with sulphuric or hydrochloric acid of a strength in excess of that employed in ordinary souring processes. The cellulose solution may be applied by padding, printing, stencilling, &c., and it may be mixed with mordants, colouring matters, pigments, mica, metal powder, &c. White or coloured resists may be employed to confine the action of the cellulose solution and, or, the mercerizing-agent, mordant, or dye. When a solution containing 1 1/2 -2 per cent of cellulose is employed, a transparent effect is produced, and if the morcerization is effected without tension, the fibres are permanently, contracted or shrunk. With a solution containing about 4 per cent of cellulose, a highly lustrous silk-like opaque effect is produced. If the cellulose film is allowed to contract during the subsequent operations, highly lustrous crimp or crape effects are produced. If the solution is applied in stripes along the selvages, the appearance of umbrella cloth having lace inserted is produced, and of the mercerization is effected without tension crimp or crape effects are produced. Crape effects may also be produced by carrying out the mercerization and, or, the subsequent drying with greater tension in the direction of the weft than in the direction of the warp.
