Abstract

In a process for fixing mechanical effects upon textile fabrics with the aid of thermosetting synthetic resins, the fabric is shrunk with an alkali hydroxide solution prior to the application of the resin. Lightweight cotton fabrics may be so treated and the alkali hydroxide may be applied to the grey, kier-boiled or bleached fabric. The alkali hydroxide may be sodium hydroxide at 22 DEG -30 DEG B<\>ae or potassium hydroxide at 24 DEG -30 DEG B<\>ae. The mechanical effect may be goffering, Schreinering, moire or calendering, with or without friction, and may be fixed with the aid of aqueous solutions of precondensates of formaldehyde with urea, thiourea, ethylene urea and its homologues, urein, acetylene diurein and its derivatives, dicyandiamide, melamine, phenol or phenol derivatives or mixtures of these precondensates, or ketone-aldehyde or dimethylol-uron precondensates, which may contain acid or alkaline catalysts, dyestuffs, pigments or metal powders. The fabric may be dyed prior to or after the resin treatment and the resinous solution, which may contain dyes or pigments, may be printed; also, the resinprinted fabric may be colour printed. The resin is cured by heating after the mechanical treatment and the fabric may be aftertreated with dilute sodium or potassium hydroxide solution, which has a swelling effect but not shrinking effect, or with an alkali hydroxide solution of mercerizing strength. The ground of the fabric may be transparentized or parchmentized with sulphuric acid. In the examples cotton fabrics are treated with alkali hydroxide solutions after, between or before kier boiling and bleaching treatments and after rinsing and drying, either in the loose state or on a tenter or under tension, are impregnated with the resin solution, dried at 40 DEG C., mechanically treated, in one case by embossing at 200 DEG C., and cured at 140 DEG C., whereafter they are rinsed and dried on a tenter or under tension. In examples (2) and (3) the fabrics are aftertreated with sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide, respectively, at 20 DEG B<\>ae and in examples (6) and (7) the fabrics are after-treated with sodium hydroxide at 38 DEG B<\>ae, washed and dried. In Example 7 the drying is performed on a loop drier and the fabric is then steamed with slight cross-stretching on a tenter frame. The resin compositions in the examples are made up from the following ingredients:-poly - methylol melamine, hexamethylol melamine, ketone - aldehyde, a fatty carbamide, locust bean flour, tragacanth, triethanolamine glycollate, methyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, ammonium chloride, ammonium thiocyanate, calcined soda, an alkyl phenol-ethylene oxide condensation product and dyestuffs.
