Abstract

The wash-fastness of colourations produced on textile materials by means of a disperse acetate dyestuff containing a plurality of reactive groups selected from amino and alcoholic and phenolic hydroxyl groups is improved by treating the dyed material with formaldehyde together with a soluble, heat-curable, condensation product of formaldehyde and a compound containing a reactive -NH- group, the condensation product containing N-hydroxymethyl or N-lower-alkoxymethyl radicals or both, and heating to effect reaction between the dye and the condensation product, if desired in the presence of an acid catalyst. The process is applicable to fibres of cellulose esters or ethers (including cellulose triacetate) if desired in admixture with other fibres, many of which are specified, and also to nylon fibres. Condensation products of formaldehyde with urea, melamine, ethylene urea, guanidine, dicyandiamide, guanyl urea or N-methyl urea may be employed and the methylol groups may be etherified with lower aliphatic alcohols, the condensation product being applied as an aqueous solution, containing, if desired, a swelling agent for the fibre. Many suitable disperse acetate dyestuffs, including those described in Specifications 794,176, 794,177 and 794,178 are specified. In the case of chelatable disperse acetate dyestuffs, improved results are obtained by applying a metal-containing chelating agent to the dyed material before, together with or after the condensation product, specified chelating agents being copper sulphate or acetate, copper complexes with organic compounds and chelating agents containing zirconium, nickel and chromium. In treating textiles comprising mixtures of cellulose acetate and regenerated cellulose fibres, silicones and condensation products of long chain fatty amines or amides with melamine and formaldehyde may be applied to the textile together with the condensation product. Such textiles may also be dyed in a bath containing a direct dyestuff in addition to the disperse acetate dyestuff, and a subsequent treatment with a copper-containing chelating agent also serves to fix the direct dyestuff.
