Abstract

A reducing agent comprising a sulphoxylate formaldehyde and a nitroaryl compound that is water-soluble by virtue of an anionic substituent which it contains is employed in dyeing or printing textile fibres with vat dyes and in obtaining discharge prints. The nitroaryl compound may contain as aryl residue a naphthalene, stilbene or preferably, benzene residue and as anionic substituents sulphato, phosphato, carboxylic acid or, preferably, sulphonic acid groups. The preferred nitroaryl compound is m-nitro-benzene sulphonate. The reducing agent may contain 1-50% nitroaryl compound by weight of sulphoxylate formaldehyde. The vat dye alkali, sulphoxylate formaldehyde and nitroaryl compound may be applied to the fibres in any order and in any combination and the damp fibres are then subjected to a heat treatment. Examples are given of dyeing, printing and obtaining coloured discharges on cotton fabrics.
