Abstract

In the dyeing or printing of textile materials consisting of or containing non-cellulosic fibres with vat dyestuffs, the material is impregnated with an acid leuco vat dye, which has been prepared by reducing a vat dye at an elevated temperature, preferably above 60 DEG C., by means of thiourea dioxide in the presence of a cationic surface active agent, and then submitted to oxidation. The acid leuco derivative is preferably formed in situ by impregnating or printing the material with a mixture of the vat dye, thiourea dioxide and the cationic agent and then heating Specified cationic agents are quaternary ammonium compounds such as cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide and pyridinium or morpholinium compounds. The process is particularly applicable to cellulose acetate fibres, if desired in admixture with wool, silk, nylon and polyester fibres; mixed fabrics of wool and cotton may also be treated. Examples describe the dyeing of cellulose acetate and cellulose acetate-nylon fabrics, additions to the dyebath being ethylene glycol diacetate, acid sodium phosphates and hexylene glycol. Another example describes the printing of a wool-cotton fabric with a paste containing a vat dye, thiourea dioxide, cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, polyethylene glycol, glycerol and British gum-tragacanth thickener, the printed fabric then being dried, steamed, rinsed and oxidized with aqueous sodium percarbonate.
