Abstract

Cotton fabrics are pattern-printed with a synthetic resin precondensate or are impregnated all over with the synthetic resin precondensate and pattern-printed with a curing inhibitor; they are then embossed all over, heated to cure the resin and, after rinsing with water, are treated with an alkaline swelling agent which has a swelling action but not a shrinking or parchmentizing action. The synthetic resin precondensate may be obtained from formaldehyde and urea, thiourea, ethylene urea and its homologues, uron, acetylene diurein and its derivatives, dicyandiamide, melamine, phenol, or phenol derivatives or mixtures of these components, or may be a ketone-aldehyde precondensate and may include an acid or alkaline catalyst, a dye or pigment or compound forming such or a metal powder to produce gold, silver or copper effects. The swelling agent may be caustic soda of 15 DEG -22 DEG Be., caustic pot ash of 10 DEG to 25 DEG Be., or solutions of zinc chloride or calcium thiocyanate of concentrations up to saturation. The fabric may be pre-dyed or printed in colours. In examples, (1) a bleached cotton taffeta is printed with an aqueous composition comprising hexamethylolmelamine, ammonia, ammonium thiocyanate, methyl cellulose and a pigment; after drying at 40 DEG C. and embossing at 200 DEG C., the resin is cured at 114 DEG C. and the fabric is washed, dried and impregnated with caustic soda of 20 DEG Be., in which condition it is stored for some time; it is then rinsed and stenter-dried; (2) a dyed cotton percale is printed with an aqueous composition comprising hexamethylolmelamine, carob bean meal, ammonia, ammonium chloride and a pigment, dried at 40 DEG C., embossed at 200 DEG C., cured for four minutes at 140 DEG C. and washed and dried in the loose state; it is then impregnated with caustic potash, stored in this condition for fifteen minutes and then rinsed and stenter-dried. In other examples zinc chloride and calcium thiocyanate are used as swelling agents, a ketone-aldehyde precondensate is used and different colour effects are obtained by vat dyeing or printing.
