Abstract

White or coloured discharge effects are produced on yarns or fabrics of vegetable fibres by printing with a paste which contains (a) sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate (b) an alkali metal carbonate, (c) a catalyst such as anthraquinone (d) a thickening agent, if desired (e) a discharge-resistant dyestuff and also (f) a compound of neutral or alkaline reaction which is hygroscopic or contains water of crystallization thereafter drying the printed material, subjecting it to a dry heat treatment and finishing in the normal way. The dry heat treatment may be effected at 120-150 DEG C for a period of 3-5 minutes. Specified compounds (f) are urea, glycerine, thiodiethylene glycol and thiourea, (e) may be a pigment dyestuff and is applied together with a normal binding agent. The ground dyeings may be produced with dischargeable water-soluble or insoluble azo dyes, pigment, reactive, complex metal or mordant dyes or substantive dyes after-treated with quaternary compounds. Examples of discharge printing or cotton fabrics are given.
