Abstract

Substantive dyes, dyeing with; regenerated celluloses, dyeing; printing.--The fastness to washing of dyeings or prints of direct dyestuffs on cellulosic fibres is increased by a subsequent treatment with a condensation product of urea or a derivative thereof with formaldehyde followed by heat or other treatment to convert the condensation product into the insoluble condition. The fastness to light is also increased even when the final hardening step is replaced by a simple drying. Specified cellulosic fibres are cotton, linen, jute, ramie and regenerated cellulose artificial silk. Specified condensation products are those of formaldehyde with urea or a homologue thereof, thiourea, dicyandiamide, biuret, guanidine, guanylurea, cyanuric acid or mixtures thereof. The following examples are specified; (1) Cotton fabric, dyed a deep blue-red by treatment for 45 minutes in a boiling bath containing direct violet R and common salt, rinsing and drying, is immersed at room temperature in a 15 per cent solution of dimethylolurea, pressed until the weight is double that of the original fabric, dried and heated for 2 minutes at 165 DEG C.; the dyeing is fast to washing and to soap. (2) Cotton fabric, dyed with Cotton yellow CH, Direct fast scarlet SE or Direct sky blue (greenish), is impregnated by immersion at room temperature in a 15 per cent solution of dimethylolurea of pH=4,5, pressed until the weight is double that of the original fabric, dried and heated for 2 minutes at 160 DEG C.; a table is given showing the effect on the fastness of the dyeings to water and washing. (3) Cotton fabric, dyed with Direct sky blue (greenish), Cotton yellow CH, Direct fast orange SE, Direct fast scarlet SE, Chlorantin light red 5BL or Melantherin BH, is impregnated as in (2) and dried; the fastness to light of the dyeings is considerably increased. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the simultaneous application, especially in printing, of the dyestuff and the condensation product, prior to the heat treatment. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
