Abstract

A multiplicity of reactive dyes having different reactivities or a colourless compound of high reactivity and a dyestuff of lower reactivity are applied to fabrics of cellulose fibres in an overlapping manner and the amount of acid-binding agent restricted in the overlapping areas so that only the more reactive dye or colourless compound fixes on the fibre in that portion. The specified colourless reactive compound is sodium 1-(21, 41-dichloro-s-triazin-61-ylamino) -naphthalene-5-sulphonate, the preferred dyes of higher reactivity contain a dichlorotriazine or a quaternized chlorotriazine group and the preferred dyes of lower reactivity contain a chloroaminotriazine, a di-or tri-chloropyrimidine or a sulphatoethyl-sulphonamide group. The process may be carried out by printing the fabric with a paste containing the more reactive dye and over-printing, cover-printing, slop-or nip-padding with a liquor or paste containing the less reactive dye and an acid-binding agent. Subsequent heating or steaming fixes the dyestuffs. The print paste containing the more reactive dye may also contain a neutral substance which forms an acid on steaming, e.g., diethyl tartrate, dimethyl-oxalate, urea oxalate and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, as well as known adjurents. The print paste may contain the more reactive dye, the colourless reactive compound and the neutral substance. Examples of obtaining white and coloured resist effects on cotton and viscose fabrics are given.
