Abstract

Fabric consisting of or containing protein or cellulose ester fibres, e.g. wool, silk, mohair, alpaca, peanut protein, casein and cellulose acetate fabrics, if desired in admixture with cellulose fibres, and dyed with a dischargeable dyestuff, is discharged in selected areas by application of a non-alkaline printing paste containing thiourea dioxide, a thickening agent and a zinc salt of an acid which does not discharge dischargeable dyestuffs, whereupon the fabric is subjected to saturated steam at a temperature of about 100 DEG C. Specified zinc salts are the sulphate, acetate and thiocyanate. The printing paste may also contain a white pigment, an optical bleaching agent or a dyestuff. Examples describe the treatment of a chlorinated wool fabric dyed with Neolan Red BRE; a cellulose acetate fabric dyed with Serisol Rubine 3BD; a wool-cellulose acetate fabric dyed with Neolan Blue G and Cibacet Direct Discharge Blue 3GN; and a silk fabric dyed with Diamine Green B, in which latter case the discharge paste also contains Discharge Red for Silk G.
