Abstract

Polyacrylonitrile fibres are dyed with a monoazo dyestuff, free from sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups, but which contains at least one primary, secondary or tertiary amino group or quaternary ammonium group which is not directly attached to or forms part of an aromatic nucleus but is attached to a carbon atom of a terminal radical of the dyestuff molecule. The dyestuffs are employed in the form of their water-soluble salts and are applied from an acid or alkaline bath. The dyestuffs may belong to the benzene-azobenzene, benzene-azonaphthathalene, benzene-azo-arylpyrazolone, benzene-azo-acylacetic acid-aryl- (or -alkyl-) amide series or to the heterocyclic series. The amino group, which may be contained in either the diazo- or the azo-component, may be attached to an aromatic nucleus via an alkylene, alkyleneamino, carboxylic acid ester, carboxylic acid amide or sulphonamide group. Numerous dyestuffs are specified. The dyestuff of the formula <FORM:0808713/IV (c)/1> is obtained from 5-chloro-2-cyano-aniline--> 1 - {N - ethyl - N - (b - dimethylamino - ethyl)-amino} - 3 - methylbenzene (quaternated with dimethyl sulphate). This method is generally applicable to the other dyestuffs specified. Specification 785,988 is referred to.
