Abstract

Nitrogenous fibres, such as wool, silk and polyamide fibres, are dyed by treatment in an acid bath containing a sulphonated copper phthalocyanine and an auxiliary compound containing at least one basic nitrogen atom to which is attached at least one radical containing a polyglycol ether chain, the compound containing in its molecule at least three groups of the structure <FORM:0860908/IV(c)/1> and at least four carbon atoms not belonging to such a group, the pH of the bath being raised to above 6, e.g., 6,5-9, after the fibres have absorbed the required amount of dye. The sulphonated copper phthalocyanines may contain, two, three or four sulphonic acid groups, and if desired other substituents such as halogen atoms or sulphonic acid amide groups. Mixtures of sulphonated copper phthalocyanines with reactive dyes or with solubilized metal complex azo dyes may be employed. Numerous auxiliary compounds, which are condensation products of an alkylene oxide with a compound containing at least one basic primary or secondary amino group or one basic tertiary amino group and in addition an alcoholic hydroxyl group, or salts or quaternary ammonium salts of such condensation products, are specified. The dyebath is acidified preferably with acetic acid, and dyeing is effected at or near or above 100 DEG C. On completion of dyeing, elevation of the pH is effected by the addition of an alkaline substance, such as ammonia, hexamethylenetetramine, ethanolamines, alkali metal ortho- or poly-phosphates or mixtures thereof to the dyebath. This after-treatment is also preferably effected at an elevated temperature. Examples describe the dyeing of wool and a wool-polyamide fibre mixture.
