Abstract

In the dyeing of nitrogenous fibres, such as wool, silk or polyamide fibres, with a reactive dyestuff containing at least one reactive halogen atom, from an acid bath having a pH of at most 5, improved dyeings are produced by raising the pH of the dyebath to above 6 after the fibres have absorbed the desired quantity of dyestuff, by the addition of, for example, ammonia, ethanolamines, hexamethylene tetramine, trialkali metal orthophosphates or alkali metal polyphosphates or bicarbonates. The dyebath contains acetic acid, and if desired sodium sulphate, and dyeing may be effected at 80 DEG -90 DEG C., or at the boil, or at temperatures above 100 DEG C. under pressure. In the case of certain dyestuffs, more level effects are obtained by the addition to the dyebath of the nitrogenous levelling agents employed in Specification 878,021, or a cation-active compound such as cetyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide or a high molecular weight polyglycol ether of an aliphatic alcohol. Reactive soluble dyestuffs of the stilbene, nitro, triphenylmethane, phthalocyanine, anthraquinone and metallizable or metalliferous azo series may be employed. Mixtures of wool and cellulose fibres may be dyed by the process, a substantive dyestuff being added to the dyebath after raising the pH. The fastness of the dyeings on the cellulose fibres may be increased by an after-treatment with, for example, a formaldehyde-dicyandiamide condensation product. Examples of dyeing are given.
