Abstract

Leather is dyed deep shades using a composition comprising an anionic dye and a quatornised salt of a condensation product obtained from an aliphatic mono- or polyamine containing one lipophilic alkyl or alkenyl radical for molecule, with at least 10 moles of ethylene oxide (not more than 200) and optionally 1-2 moles of styrene and/or propylene oxide. The condensation product is quaternised with an ester of an aliphatic alcohol of 1-3 carbon atoms or an araliphatic alcohol with a strong acid, diethyl sulphate is especially preferred. The lipophilic group contains 10-20 carbon atoms and the amines contain 1-6 nitrogen atoms. Any acid dye is used at temperatures of 40-60 DEG C. The dyebath may contain any other auxiliary agent used in leather dyeing especially basic fixing agents as used when dyeing cellulose with direct dyes. Specification 941,741 is referred to.
