Abstract

m - [b - (dimethylaminosulphonyloxy) - ethyl - sulphonyl] aniline is made by reducing the corresponding nitro-benzene prepared by reacting dimethylaminosulphonic acid chloride with 3-nitro - 1 - (21 - hydroxy) - ethylsulphonylbenzene in dry pyridine. The 41-amino-2 : 21-dimethyl-sulpho-diphenylyl carbamic ester of p-toluene-sulphonyloxyethoxyethanol is made by reacting 4 : 4-diamino-2 : 21-dimethyl-1 : 11-diphenyl-5-sulphonic acid with the chloroformic ester obtained by treating the addition product of 2 mols of ethylene oxide and 1 mol of 4-methylbenzene-sulphonic acid with phosgene.ALSO:The invention comprises water-soluble dyestuffs of the formula A-[x-(CnH2n-O-SO2-R)m]p where A is the radical of a dyestuff, R is an aliphatic, alicyclic, aromatic or heterocyclic radical which may be substituted or for a dialkylamino, a N-alkyl-N-aryl-sulphonyl-amino or a N-alkyl-N-arylcarbonyl-amino radical, x is a simple linkage, oxygen, sulphur, <FORM:0894788/IV (c)/1> or, if R is dialkylamino, a N-alkyl-N-aryl-sulphonylamino or a N-alkyl-N-arylcarbonyl-amino radical, also <FORM:0894788/IV (c)/2> R1 is hydrogen or alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or acyl which may be substituted, m is 1 or 2 and n and p are 1, 2 or 3. Dyestuffs specified for A are mono-, dis- and polyazo, anthraquinone, phthalocyanine, dioxazine and nitro dyestuffs. The dyestuffs are made by esterifying dyestuffs of the formula A-[x-(CnH2n-OH)m]p with a functional derivative of an organic sulphonic or sulphinic acid of the formula R-SOq-OH where q is 1 or 2 and when q is 1 oxidising the product to the sulphonic ester, or by subjecting to azo coupling or condensation intermediates which contain substituents capable of taking part in dyestuff formation, of which at least one intermediate contains the grouping -CnH2n-O-SO2-R, in all the processes the reactants being chosen so that the dyestuffs are water-soluble. The dyestuffs dye, pad and print in a variety of shades animal fibres and synthetic polyamide fibres from acid, neutral or weakly alkaline baths, and cellulose fibres in conjunction with an alkali and heat treatment.
