Abstract
The invention comprises reactive dyes of formula <FORM:1123865/C4-C5/1> wherein F is the radical of an organic dye, X is a direct bond or bridge member, A is a 5-membered heterocyclic ring which contains at least one reactive sulphonyl substituent (i.e. a substituent linked to such carbon atom of the heterocyclic ring as to be reactive with the amide or hydroxy groups of fibrous material to form a covalent linkage) and m is a number from 0.5 to 8, with the proviso that -X-A does not stand for a radical of formula <FORM:1123865/C4-C5/2> in which Y and Z are reactive sulphonyl substituents and W is a bridge member. The dyes may be used to colour natural and synthetic polyamide, polyurethane and in particular cellulose fibres, by the usual reactive dye processes. They are obtained by introducing a sulphonyl-substituted 5-membered heterocyclic ring by condensation into a dye or dye intermediate and, in the case of the intermediate, completing the formation of the dye by a condensation or azo coupling reaction. In examples, the preparation of mono-, dis- and tris-azo, metallized azo, stilbene-azo, nitro, phthalocyanine and anthraquinone dyes containing 4 - methyl- or -isopropyl - 2 - methylsulphonyl-thiazole - (5) - carbonylamino or 2 - methylsulphonyl - thiadiazol - (1,3,4) - yl - 5 - amino or 3 - methylsulphonyl - thiadiazol - (1,2,4) - yl - 5 - amino residues is described.ALSO:2 - N - [5 - Methylsulphonyl - thiadiazol - (1,3,4) - yl - (2)] - methylamino - 5 - naphthol - 7-sulphonic acid is prepared by reacting 2,5-bismethylsulphonyl-thiadiazole-(1,3,4) with 2-N-methylamino-5-naphthol-7-sulphonic acid in aqueous medium at pH 5-6. 1 - N - [5 - methylsulphonyl - thiadiazol - (1,2,4) - yl - (2)] - amino - 8 - naphthol - 4,6 - di-sulphonic acid is similarly prepared from the aminonaphthol sulphonic acid and 3,5-bismethylsulphonyl-thiadiazole-(1,2,4). 2,5 - Bismethylsulphonyl - thiadiazole - (1,3,4) and 3,5 - bis - methylsulphonyl - thiadiazole - (1,2,4) are prepared by oxidizing the corresponding bis-methylmercapto compounds with performic or peracetic acid.
