Abstract

The invention comprises dyes of formula:- <FORM:0875995/IV(c)/1> where R is the residue of a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring, R1 is an alkyl, aralkyl or aryl radical, R2 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radical, A is a mono- or bi-valent radical of an aromatic or heteroycolic amine, m is 1 or 2 and X is an acid radical. They are made by quaternizing heterocyclic dyes of formula:- <FORM:0875995/IV(c)/2> the latter being obtained by treating with alkalis the corresponding basic dyes, isolated as salts, of formula:- <FORM:0875995/IV(c)/3> The basic dyes are made in conventional fashion from appropriate heterocyclic and amine components. Representative of many specified heterocyclic components are:-1, 3, 3 3-trimethyl-5-nitro- 2-methylene-indoline, alkyl esters and amides of 1, 3, 3-trimethyl-2-methylene-indolene-5-carboxylic acid, 1, 3, 3-trimethyl- 5-cyano- 2-methylene indolene, 1, 3, 3-trimethyl-benzo-(6, 7)-2-methylene-indolene, and 1, 3-dimethyl-2-methylene-quinoxaline. Representative of indicated A components are:-aniline and its halo and alkoxy derivatives, aminodiphenylamines, benzidine, naphthylamines, aminoazobenzenes, aminodiphenyls and aminobenzthiazoles. Specified alkylating agents are dimethyl and diethyl sulphate, benzyl chloride, methyl iodide and toluene sulphonic acid esters. The dyes colour textiles, acetate rayon, paper, coir and leather. Dyes free from sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups are especially suitable for colouring polyacrylonitrile. In examples, which illustrate the preparation of the dyes and their use in colouring acetate rayon and polyacrylonitrile fibres in yellow shades, further heterocyclic residues present are derived from 1-methyl- 2-formylbenzimidazole, 1, 3, 4-trimethyl- 6-methylene-dihydropyrimidon-2, pyridine, quinoline and 1-methyl-2-formylbenz-thiazol and -oxazole. An example is also provided of the preparation of an ink vide Group XV.
