Abstract

The invention comprises insoluble dyes of formula <FORM:0893166/IV (c)/1> where X is alkyl or alkoxy, R is alkyl or aryl and R1 is an aryl or heterocyclic residue free from groups imparting solubility in water. The dyes may be made by coupling diazo compounds from appropriate aminoazo dyes with the required amide of a b -ketocarboxylic acid. The dyes may be made in substance or on the fibre. The dyes colour fibrous textile materials in green, brown, grey and black shades. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in printing cotton fabrics. Representative of the diazo components used are: 2 - amino - 4,5 - diethoxy-, 4-ethoxy-5-methoxy- and 4-methoxy-5 - methyl - 21 - methylsulphonyl - 41 - nitro - 1,11-azobenzenes and typical coupling components are: 2 - acetoacetylamino - 6 - ethoxybenzthiazole, 1 - acetoacetylamino - 2, 5 - dimethoxy - 4 - chlorobenzene, 1 - acetoacetylamino - 2, 5 - dimethylbenzene and 1 - benzoylacetylamino - 2, 5 - dimethoxy - 4 - benzoylaminobenzene.
