Abstract

The invention comprises dyestuffs of formula: <FORM:0860995/IV(c)/1> where X is an alkyl or alkoxy group, Y is H or Hlg and R is an aromatic or heterocyclic radical free from groups imparting solubility in water. They are made by coupling a diazonium compound of an appropriate benzene-azo-aniline dyestuff with the requisite arylamide. Coupling may be effected in substance or on the fibre or another substratum. Brown to green dyeings are produced on cellulosic fibres and plastic masses may be coloured or lakes obtained. In examples, illustrative of the preparation of the dyestuffs both in substance and on the fibre and their use in dyeing cotton or the preparation of colour lakes, the diazo components used are 2-amino-4, 5- di-methoxy, -ethoxy and -n-propoxy-, -4-methoxy-5-methyl-, -ethyl- and -ethoxy- and -4-ethyl-5-methoxy-21-methysulphonyl-41 -nitro-1, 11-azobenzenes and 2-amino- 4, 5-di-methoxy- and ethoxy- and -4-methoxy- 5-methyl- 21-ethyl- andn-propylsulphonyl - 41-nitro- 1, 11- azobenzenes and the coupling components are 1- (21, 31-hydroxynaphthoylamino)- 2-methyl-, ethoxy- and methoxy- 2-methoxy- 4-chloro- 5-methyl-, 2-methoxy- 5-chloro-, -2-methyl- 4-methoxy- and -chloro-, -2-methyl- 5-chloro-, -2, 5-dimethoxy, -2, 3- and -2, 4-dimethyl-, -2, 5-dimethoxy- 4-chloro-, -3-nitro-, 4-methyl-, -chloro-, -methoxy- and -ethoxy-benzenes, 2, 3-hydroxynaphthoylaminobenzene, 1-(61 -bromo-21, 31-hydroxynaphthoylamino)- 2-methoxybenzene, 1- and 2 2- (21, 31-hydroxy-naphthoylamino)-naphthalene and 2- (21, 31-hydroxy-naphthoylamino)- 3-methoxydiphenylene oxide.
