Abstract

The invention comprises water-insoluble disazo dyes of formula <FORM:0900854/IV (b)/1> wherein X is an alkyl or alkoxy group and R is an aromatic radical, the dyes being free from groups imparting solubility in water. They are prepared by coupling 1 mol of a tetrazo-compound of a 3 : 31-dialkyl- or dialkoxy-benzidine in substance or on the fibre with 1 mol of a 2 : 3-hydroxynaphthoic acid arylide and 1 mol of a 3-arylaminophenol, the components being free from water-solubilising groups. The dyes give black shades on cellulose fibres. In Examples: (1) the dye 2 : 3-hydroxynaphthoylaminobenzene \sM 3 : 31-dimethoxy-benzidine --> 3-hydroxydiphenylamine is prepared; (2) dyes of the above formula are formed on cotton fabrics using conventional printing and dyeing processes. A number of alternative reactants are specified.
