Abstract

Pattern-weave effects and a mechanical finish are obtained in fabrics comprising nitrated and ordinary natural or regenerated cellulose yarns by printing the fabric locally with a synthetic resin precondensate, subjecting it to a mechanical treatment, curing the resin and then treating the fabric with an alkaline solution and, if required, heat or steam, whereby the nitrated yarns in the un-printed areas are removed. The mechanical treatment may comprise calendering or embossing. Instead of printing the resin locally, the fabric may be impregnated all over with the resin and an alkaline reserve printed on the fabic to prevent curing of the resin at selected parts. The resin may be a condensate of formaldehyde with urea, thiourea, ethylene urea, acetylene diurein or its derivatives, dicyandiamide, melamine, phenol, phenol derivatives or mixtures of these components and a catalyst may be included in the resin composition which may also include acid dyes, vat dyes, free leuco compounds, sulphuric acid esters of leuco dyes and metal powders to give gold, silver or copper effects. After curing the resin the fabric may be impregnated with a caustic soda solution or printed with a caustic soda solution thickened with British gum or wheat flour followed by heating or steaming, after which the fabric is washed and may be dried under tension. Prior to the process the fabric may be singed, desized, boiled in a solution containing Yarmor Pine Oil and bleached, and after the process the treated fabric may be dyed, the resin-coated areas remaining undyed, transparentized with sulphuric acid and after-mercerized, or impregnated with methyl, ethyl or glycol cellulose, cellulose sodium zincate or viscose and subsequently mercerized, or shrunk with an alkali solution of mercerizing strength.
