Abstract
Pattern effects are produced on fabrics of vegetable fibres by local treatment with parchmentizing and shrinking agents so that shrinking takes place and the fabric contains partly overlapping patterns. Suitable parchmentizing agents are a solution of calcium thiocyanate thickened with cellulose and containing formaldehyde, sulphuric acid, and zinc chloride solution; a suitable shrinking agent is soda lye. The local effects may be obtained by reserve printing or by direct printing. The treated fabric may be overdyed, the treated and untreated portions having different dyeing affinities. In examples, (1) a mercerized, bleached cotton muslin is printed with a gum reserve and passed through sulphuric acid of 55 DEG B<\>ae. at 10 DEG C., washed and dried under tension. The fabric is then treated with a further gum reserve to overlap the previous pattern, and treated with mercerizing soda lye without tension and washed hot; (2) a mercerized, bleached cotton muslin is printed with a calcium thiocyanate paste containing cellulose and formaldehyde, as described in Specification 439,749, dried at 100 DEG C., passed through a concentrated calcium chloride solution at 120 DEG C., washed and dried under tension. It is then printed with a gum reserve, shrunk with mercerizing lye, washed and finished; (3) a mercerized unbleached cotton muslin is printed with a zinc chloride solution thickened with cellulose, according to Specification 450,837, dried and washed. An overlapping design is then printed with soda lye thickened with British gum, allowed to stand, and finished as described in example 1. Specification 196,696, [Class 42 (i)], also is referred to.
