Abstract
Vegetable fibrous materials are subjected to the action of ammoniacal copper oxide solution containing less than 1.5 per cent of alkali metal hydroxide, contraction of the fibres is then effected by means of dilute acid, water or dilute alkali, and finally the copper is removed in the usual manner. In modifications, after treatment with the ammoniacal copper, the fibres are mercerised, or the ammoniacal copper may be applied locally or the fibres may be bleached or mercerised before treatment. Local effects may also be obtained by locally hot pressing a fabric and then treating with the ammoniacal copper. In examples: (1) bleached creton cotton fabric is treated with the ammoniacal copper containing alkali and the fibres simultaneously contracted and decoppered by means of sulphuric acid; the finished fabric is soft and linen like: (2) calico and also mercerised cotton yarn after treatment with the ammoniacal copper are treated with caustic soda or potash and then decoppered: (3) cotton fabric and a card band of ramie or China grass fibres are treated first with the ammoniacal copper, then mercerised and finally decoppered: (4) cotton fabric, reserve printed with dextrine is treated as in the previous example, damask like patterns being obtained. Mixtures of vegetable fibres with other natural or artificial fibres may be used in the process, and the fabrics may be treated on one side only, and in the loose or stretched condition. Specification 301,392, [Class 42 (i), Fabrics, Finishing &c.], is referred to.
