Abstract
443,635. Compound fabrics. SHEPHERD, T. L., 7, Park Lane, London. June 27, 1934, Nos. 19030 and 26239. Divided out of 444,012, [Group VII]. [Class 140] Multi-ply fabrics are made by immersing the plies in a cuprammonium solution of cellulose, which may have a solvent action on the fabric, pressing the plies together and then treating in a coagulating bath to precipitate the cellulose. The coagulating bath may comprise caustic soda or sulphuric acid, and be of sufficient strength to give either a mercerizing or a parchmentized finish. An interlining of blotting or other paper, a nappe of fibres, or other filling of vegetable origin may be inserted between the plies. A final coating of cellulose acetate, nitrocellulose or the like may be applied to the fabric by brushing, spraying, or otherwise, and dried in air, an inert gas, by heat or otherwise. Cut edges of the fabric may also be treated with a coating such as a solution of cellulose acetate, to prevent fraying. The plies are preferably passed through the cuprammonium solution at 30-40 yards per minute, the solution pressed well into the material, and excess removed by scrapers or squeezing rollers ; after treatment in the coagulating bath undesirable by-products may be eliminated by washing or acidification ; the fabric is then dried and calendered or ironed. The product is suitable for the manufacture of collars, cuffs, shirts, tablecloths, napkins, millinery, and the like.
