Abstract
335,176. Marshall, W. June 17, 1929. Yarns &c., treating with liquids.-The softness, extensibility, elasticity, tensile strength, and even dyeing properties of regenerated cellulose threads and films and textile materials coated or impregnated with regenerated cellulose, are improved by treating the material with caustic soda of not less than 28‹ Twaddell and then removing the whole or greater part of the alkali by washing with aqueous solutions of sodium or potassium chloride, sulphate, nitrate, chlorate, or sodium thiosulphate, ammonium chloride or sulphate, or cane sugar, glycerine, or glucose. Caustic potash may be used instead of caustic soda. Preferably the strength of the caustic soda is from 40‹-60‹ Tw. and the material is treated at a temperature of 0‹-60‹ C. The alkali is preferably washed out with a solution of sodium chloride at 50‹ C. In examples, viscose yarn is treated with strong caustic soda solution and the alkali is removed by washing with sodium chloride solution; freshly spun viscose silk prior to the first drying is treated with strong caustic soda at room temperature and the alkali is washed out with warm sodium chloride, followed by treatment with dilute sulphuric acid and further washing with water. Specifications 281,352; and 323,307, [Class 42 (i), Fabrics, Finishing &c.], are referred to.
