Abstract

Transparent cellulose-containing fabrics, threads, &c. which are of the same order of softness as the original material are prepared by treating the material with sulphuric acid of a concentration greater than 50 DEG B<\>ae at temperatures below 0 DEG C. The fibre structures may be mercerised with alkaline lyes before or after treatment with sulphuric acid or both before and after treatment or they may be bleached before treatment. Pyridine, its homologues and derivatives such as Piperidine, picoline and lutidine and their sulphates and hydrochlorides, monohydric or polyhydric alcohols such as amyl alcohol, glycol and glycerine, and ammonium salts such as ammonium sulphate, chloride and acetate may be used with the sulphuric acid as decomposition preventing agents. Patterned effects may be obtained by local treatment or the products may be subjected to dyeing or colour-printing processes. The cellulose containing fibres may be cotton, linen or ramie or cellulose-containing artificial fibres with or without other fibres and the structures may be woven fabric, plaited work, knitted fabric or yarn. In examples (1) bleached and mercerised cotton cambric is treated with sulphuric acid, washed, mercerised with caustic soda solution, washed and dried on the shaking stretching frame; (2) bleaching viscose-cotton fabric is treated with sulphuric acid; (3) mercerised loosely twisted cotton thread is treated with sulphuric acid; (4) reserve printed cotton muslin is treated with sulphuric acid and then mercerised with caustic soda solution. Specification 108,671 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the use of formaldehyde as an agent preventing decomposition. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
